Enlightening Bites Lecture Series

Friday, April 2, 2021

Flipper Room, Thomas County Public Library

12 P.M. to 1 P.M.

Pebble Hill Plantation and the Thomas County Public Library are pleased to announce the upcoming Enlightening Bites program, A Community of Fire: Longleaf Pine and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers in the Red Hills on Friday, April 2, 2021 at 12 Noon in the Flipper Room of the Library. The program is being presented by Joe Burnam, Wildlife Biologist, with the Wildlife Conservation Section of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Mr. Burnam’s program is centered on the long-leaf pine and the red-cockaded woodpeckers of Southwest Georgia. The Red Hills Region of Southwest Georgia and North Florida contains some of the finest remnants of the longleaf pine ecosystem in the Southeast. Large, contiguous landholdings in the region managed for northern bobwhites have maintained excellent habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and other important species. Mr. Burnam will discuss longleaf ecology and management from a cultural and ecological perspective, and how this management has been successful in maintaining an intact and diverse ecosystem, including the largest population of red-cockaded woodpeckers remaining on private lands.

Mr. Burnam is a wildlife biologist with the Wildlife Conservation Section of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. He earned a BSEd and MS in Wildlife Ecology and Management from the University of Georgia. He works primarily with the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker on state and private land in Southwest Georgia and helps manage upland pine habitat on southwest Georgia Wildlife Management Areas. He lives in Cairo with his wife, two children, and a bird dog.

The Enlightening Bites Lecture Series is co-sponsored by Pebble Hill Plantation and the Thomas County Public Library. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch. Drinks are provided. The series is free and open to the public.
