Additional Information

Elisabeth Ireland Poe was a pioneer and trailblazer for women in polo. At a time when women were denied membership in the US Polo Association, she joined under her initials and earned a handicap of “1” while competing against men. When her ruse was discovered she was stripped of her membership and her rating. It was in Cleveland, Ohio when she was but a teenager that she began to play the sport. She bred and showed many champion polo ponies. This carefully curated exhibit is a visual display of her polo career and her achievements in the sport. She helped pave the way for the US Polo Association to finally admit women in 1973. Mrs. Poe died in 1978.

Tours of the exhibit are included in the regular Main House tour admission, but you may view the exhibit on its own for the reduced admission price of $10. The Main House and Gallery are open Tuesday-Saturday, excluding posted holidays.
