Additional Information

**We apologize for postponing this program, but we are concerned for the safety of those who would be traveling here due to predicted adverse driving conditions. The program will now be held July 13th**

The Learning Center on the grounds of Pebble Hill Plantation will host a program “Black Holes: Nothing Escapes” by astronomy author, Randy Rhea. The program is open to the public and will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 PM on Thursday, June 15, 2023. Weather permitting, the program will be followed by a brief outdoor stargazing session adjacent to the Pebble Hill Learning Center.

Rhea stated “I’m often asked about black holes by curious friends, so a program on that subject is overdue.” Without using advanced math or science, Rhea will explain black holes for participants to understand and enjoy learning about these fascinating objects in space.

Black holes have a gravitational field so strong that nothing can escape, not even light. They were imagined late in the 18th century, and in 1916, Einstein’s theory of general relativity predicted them. But the first black hole wasn’t identified until 1971.

If light can’t escape from black holes, how can we see them? How do they form? How big are they? Are they a portal to another universe? Do black holes swallow other objects? These and other interesting properties of black holes will be covered in the program.
