Great Southeast Pollinator Census at Pebble Hill Plantation
Pebble Hill Plantation is taking part in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census Saturday, August 19 by hosting fun activities in the historic Kitchen Garden. The event begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. Activities include a presentation by County Extension Agent, Sydni Ingram and a plant sale by Full Circle Nursery of Thomasville. This event is FREE to the public.
The Great Southeast Pollinator Census is a citizen science project created by the University of Georgia. It is designed to encourage participation in providing habitat and food for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.
Participants in the census will choose a plant and count the number of pollinators that visit the plant during a 15-minute time frame. Pebble Hill staff will assist participants by submitting their count data to the census website: www.gsepc.org. Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina are participating in the project.
Ingram will be on hand to answer questions from the public and offer guidance in how to start or improve a pollinator garden. “I am looking forward to joining everyone for the event and am excited to share more how to promote butterflies in home gardens, “she said. “We’ll discuss butterfly biology common species, host plants, and lots more.”
Full Circle Nursery will have pollinator and host plants available for purchase on site. “We will have parsley, fennel, lantana, butterfly bush, chaste tree, and other blooming plants and herbs that will attract butterflies and other beneficial pollinators to your backyard,” said Curtis Davis, owner of Full Circle.
Again, participation in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census at Pebble Hill is free for guests of all ages. Pebble Hill’s Program Coordinator, Kitty Spivey, will have special activities for children in attendance. Visit pebblehill.com or call 229-226-2344 for more information.
